A middle-schooler, Misaki, moves to Tokyo to live with her aunt and discovers the immensely popular game Angelic Layer. Players customize fighting dolls that they can mentally control in specialized arenas, with major tournaments being televised and gaining national attention. Small Misaki is drawn to the idea of a small-but-strong doll that can win against larger opponents, and she soon finds herself facing off against some of the best.
